DURHAM, N.C. - Phase II of the 2017 15U National Team Trials began with the Stars' bullpen combining for an impressive seven scoreless innings to keep the Stripes off the board, winning 8-2 on Thursday afternoon at the USA Baseball Complex.
Leading the Stars' staff was Alejandro Rosario, who started the first two innings, striking out two and only allowing one hit. Jordan Thompson relieved for the next two, allowing the lone runs for the Stripes before Joshua Hartle and Carson Montgomery finished the final 4.0 innings, giving up just one hit between them.
Offensively, Pete Crow-Armstrong led the way, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, while Roc Riggio and Kyle Teel also went 2-for-3 with Riggio nabbing an RBI on the day.
Tanner Witt, Alek Boychuk and Masyn Winn rounded out the Stars' nine-hit day, landing on base once themselves.
On the Stripes side, Robert Moore was the lone multi-hit batter, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon with one RBI and one run. Dylan Crews, Ian Moller and Alberto Rios all finished with one hit, while Rios got the other RBI for the team.
On the mound, the Stripes' leader was Michael Flores, who went 2.0 innings, punched out three batters and allowed just one hit and an unearned run in eight batters faced.
A wild one from the very beginning, the Stars were able to score first thanks to a bizarre "inside the park home run", as Crow-Armstrong doubled to the center-field fence, but thanks to an error on the return, was able to make it all the way home on the play. Winn then reached on an error before Witt tripled to left field to plate Winn.
The rest of the game would look tame in comparison, until the seventh when another wild play led to two more runs for the Stars. Once again, Crow-Armstrong kicked everything off, singling to right field. He then made it second on a passed ball before Winn walked. Crow-Armstrong then stole third before Winn stole second. Another passed ball then allowed Crow-Armstrong to score before Winn slid home on a wild pitch.
The Stripes put up their two runs in the bottom of the third when Moore got his "inside the park home run," tripling deep to the left center gap before advancing home off an infield throwing error. Halpin then drew a walk before making it into scoring position on a wild pitch. Rios came through with a man on second, singling to left field to bring home Halpin.
The Stripes will try to even up the two-game series with the Stars in Game 2 on Friday, Aug. 4 before the final 20-man roster is announced.
