GIJANG CITY, South Korea - Ben Hernandez (Chicago, Ill.) went the distance to lead Team USA to its second win of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup Super Round on Friday at Gijang-Hyundai Dream Park in Gijang City, South Korea. The righty gave up just five hits and no walks in seven scoreless innings of work while striking out eight as the U.S. beat Canada, 10-0.

Eight different hitters combined to collect eleven hits in the contest for Team USA, led by multi-hit games from Pete Crow-Armstrong (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), Robert Hassell (Franklin, Tenn.) and Tyler Soderstrom (Turlock, Calif.). Hassell also tallied three RBIs and Hunter Haas (Phoenix, Ariz.) added two of his own in the victory.

Hernandez earned the win with his effort on the mound, while Canada's Justin Thorsteinson was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in four innings on the mound.

KEY MOMENTS

  • In the top of the first inning, Crow-Armstrong got things going for Team USA with a leadoff triple and Hassell drove him in with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
  • After Hassell brought in the first run of the game, the U.S. took a 5-0 lead with four more runs in the top of first courtesy of RBI-singles from Haas, Colby Halter (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Nolan McLean (Willow Spring, N.C.).

  • After his RBI-triple, Hassell came home on a sacrifice fly from AJ Vukovich (Mukwonago, Wisc.) in the top of the sixth inning before Ben Hernandez came in with two final scoreless innings to close out the 10-0 victory for Team USA.
