GIJANG CITY, South Korea - The 2019 18U National Team scored six runs in the seventh inning, including four with two outs, to defeat Spain 8-3 for its third win of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup on Tuesday, September 3, at Gijang-Hyundai Park in Gijang City, South Korea.

The stars and stripes were led at the plate by Robert Hassell (Franklin, Tenn.), who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Additionally, Pete Crow-Armstrong (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), Milan Tolentino (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and AJ Vukovich (Mukwonago, Wisc.) all had multiple hits in the win, and Hassell, Tolentino and Tyler Soderstrom (Turlock, Calif.) tallied two RBIs apiece for the U.S.

Mick Abel (Portlant, Ore.) started on the mound for Team USA and threw four innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out four. Alejandro Rosario (Miami, Fla.) came into the game in relief and earned the win after four innings of work in which he gave up one run on three hits and struck out three. Spain's Eduardo Dominguez, who gave up five runs and three hits in 2/3 of an inning, was tagged with the loss.

 

KEY MOMENTS

  • Back-to-back doubles to lead off the game from Crow-Armstrong and Hassell scored Team USA's first run before Hassell crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Soderstrom to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
  • A double followed by an RBI-single for Spain tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Spain used a leadoff double and a groundout to get a runner on third with one out in the bottom of the sixth before a sacrifice fly gave the team a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Tolentino got the offense going in the top of the seventh with a leadoff walk before Crow-Armstrong and Hassell once again put together back-to-back knocks to tie the game, 3-3.
  • Soderstrom gave the U.S. back the lead in the top of the seventh when he dropped an RBI-single to left field that scored Hassell.
  • Team USA added five more runs in the top of the seventh, including four with two outs, on bases-loaded walks to Jack Bulger (Bowie, Md.) and Hunter Haas (Phoenix, Ariz.) and a two-RBI single from Tolentino.
  • Hassell came into the game on the mound for the U.S. to close it out in the ninth with a fly out and two strikeouts to secure the 8-3 win.

 

NOTABLE INFORMATION

  • With the win, Team USA is now 3-1 in pool play at the 2019 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup.
  • Rosario was awarded the win after giving up just three hits, no walks and one run while striking out three batters in four innings of relief.
