
CARY, N.C. – Plenty of offense in game one saw 15 total runs score, including two home runs from Anthony Murphy and Kevin Roberts. Game two saw four runs scored combined, with a total of seven hits leading to a knotted ending to day one of 18U National Team Training Camp held at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
TEAM LIGHT BLUE 10, TEAM GREY 5
AS IT HAPPENED:
- Lucas Nawrocki rocked a base hit in the top of the second, recording an exit velocity of 107mph off the bat, picking up the first hit of the game.
- Team Grey took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, after an RBI double to center by Kevin Roberts scored Nawrocki.
- Both starting pitchers, Kaden Waechter of Team Blue and Gio Rojas of Team Grey, went two innings each, both recording four strikeouts. Rojas was incredible during his stint, not allowing any hits while facing one batter over the minimum.
- Waechter’s teammate, Logan Corley, came on in relief for Team Light Blue and worked two scoreless innings, giving up no hits and picking up four strikeouts
- Rojas (2.0 IP) and Taj Marchand (2.0 IP) held Team Light Blue hitless through four innings, only allowing three baserunners combined.
- Following his RBI double in the second frame, Roberts crushed a solo home run to deep left field in the top of the fifth, picking up his second RBI of the game and pushing the lead to 2-0.
- Blake Bowen scored off a defensive miscue attempting to steal third, allowing him to cruise home for a 3-0 lead.
- Corley came off the mound and into the batter's box for Team Light Blue, recording its first hit of the game with a leadoff triple. A wild pitch during the next at-bat scored Corley, plating the first run of the game for Team Light Blue.
- With runners on first and second, Noah Wilson smacked a hard-hit ground ball up the middle, scoring Landon Thome. A bunt single by Grady Emerson led to Anthony Murphy tying the game on an RBI single through the left side.
- After Murphy’s single came another hit, this time from Andrew Costello, which gave Team Light Blue the lead on an RBI infield single to shortstop. The inning would end with Team Light Blue leading 5-3, using five hits to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
- Scratching another run across in the top of the seventh, Dylan Seward of Team Grey drove in Roberts on a RBI groundout to put the score at 5-4, Light Blue.
- Murphy picked up his second hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run to deep left field. Leaving the yard with an exit velocity of 103mph and a total distance of 408ft, Murphy gave Team Light Blue a 7-4 lead.
- Seward smoked an RBI triple to right center field in the top of the ninth, scoring Friedberg, who reached base on his third walk of the game.
- Team Light Blue used four hits in the ninth to plate three more runs in the bottom of the ninth to set the final score at 10-5.
NOTABLE STATS:
- RJ Cope saw 26 pitches in four at-bats today, going 1-for-2 with two walks.
- Anthony Murphy led all batters in RBIs with three, smacking a two-run home run.
- Of the 33 at-bats, 14 ended in strikeouts for Team Light Blues' pitching staff, a 42% strikeout rate in the game.
- Five different players recorded multi-hit games amongst the two squads, who combined for 17 hits total.
TEAM RED 2, TEAM NAVY 2
AS IT HAPPENED:
- After two batters got on base from a walk, Team Red scored the first two runs of the game off an RBI double by Easton Autrey, taking an early 2-0 lead in the second inning.
- CJ Sampson smacked a ground rule double to left field, tying the game for Team Navy in the bottom of the third at 2-2.
- Coleman Borthwick, Joseph Contreras, and Carson Moser went a combined 5.2 innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs, and picking up a pair of strikeouts.
- Dylan Blomker and Tucker Thompson worked two clean innings combined, giving up one hit and striking out four.
- Logan Georges came on in relief for Thompson in the ninth, working through the minimum and picking up a pair of strikeouts on 12 pitches.
- After a scoreless ninth frame from Grayson Willoughby, recording a strikeout in his inning, the game ended tied at 2-2.
NOTABLE STATS:
- The team high in hits for Team Navy was two by CJ Sampson, who also had the team high in RBIs with two.
- Easton Autrey recorded one of three hits for Team Red, having the team high in RBIs with two.
- Of the 12 pitches that Logan Georges threw in the ninth, nine of them were for strikes, recording a strike percentage of 75%.
- Tyler Spangler and Beau Peterson both recorded two stolen bases in the game, with Team Red having six total stolen bases.
