CARY, N.C. - With a 6-1 defeat of Team Red on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, Team Navy earned third place at the 2021 PDP League. The squad closed the week-long event with a 2-3-1 record.

Team Navy broke onto the scoreboard in the third inning and scored five runs across the third and fourth to take a commanding 5-0 lead, highlighted by an Owen Murphy two-run home run to left field. The team added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-0 before allowing one run to Team Red in the top of the seventh for the 6-1 final score.

Riley Stanford (2-for-3) and Jayden Hylton (2-for-4) led both offenses with the only multi-hit performances of the game. Both players also scored one run each, while Owen Murphy (1-for-3) led the game in RBIs with two thanks to his two-run dinger in the third.

Ike Irish (1-for-2), Yoel Tejeda (1-for-2), and Luke Heyman (1-for-2) collected Team Red’s three hits in the contest, and Heyman was responsible for the team’s lone RBI.

In addition to his offensive showing, Murphy (1-0) also impressed on the mound for Team Navy, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out a game-high six batters to earn the win. Team Red’s Caden Marcum (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and one walk in his two innings of work.

• After two scoreless innings to start the contest, Team Navy broke through in the bottom of the third when Carsten Sabathia drew a one-out walk before coming around to score on a Hylton single and a Team Red error to give the Navy squad a 1-0 lead.
