PHOENIX, — Carl Schmidt posted five hits, including a home run, and six RBI across two games to lead Alpha Prime 2023 to a pair of wins on Day 1 of competition at the 16U National Team Championships Arizona.

Schmidt, who also doubled, tripled, scored five runs and stole three bases, filled the box score for Alpha Prime 2023, who topped Team Trinity by a 17-9 score in their first game of the event and followed with a 9-0 shutout of CBA Wave.

Schmidt is a returnee to the National Team Championships Arizona. He also captured Player of the Day honors as a member of Tri County Baseball at the 14U National Team Championships Arizona on July 7, 2019.

Ernesto Gonzalez of OC Premier Navy earned Pitcher of the Day recognition after he struck out 10 batters and collected the win in a 12-2 victory against UBC 16U Jordan. Gonzalez surrendered just two hits and one unearned run across 5.2 innings to guide OC Premier Navy to its first win of the tournament. The right-hander threw nearly 70 percent of his pitches for strikes.

Gonzalez also contributed at the plate in the victory and went 3-for-4 with one double, one RBI and one run scored.
