CARY, N.C. - The Stripes secured a dramatic 7-6 victory over the Stars in the final game of the 2019 13U Athlete Development Program (ADP) on Saturday, June 22, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. With the Stripes win, the inaugural 13U ADP Stars vs. Stripes series ends in a tie after the Stars claimed game one on Wednesday.

Ryan Sloan (Elmhurst, Ill.) got the start for the Stripes in the contest and set the tone for the pitching staff with a strong inning of work, giving up just one walk and no hits while striking out one. He also helped his own cause on offense as he finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk. On the other side of ball, Gavin Gargiulo (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the mound for the Stars to start, giving up four runs on three hits in his two innings of work.

On offense, Cade Segura (Pleasanton, Texas) led the way for the Stars, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dean Moss (Atherton, Calif.), Dylan Green (Roseville, Calif.) and Kameron Davis (Albany, Ga.) also added hits for the team. Braeden Weckman (Winter Springs, Fla.) paced the Stripes with his own multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI while Kailand Halstead (Cosmopolis, Wash.) and Julius Pfau (Tampa, Fla.) both scored two runs apiece.

Key Moments:

  • Jacob Pettit got the action started for the Stripes with a two-out double before Ryan McCluskey was hit by a pitch and Pfau drew a walk to load the bases for Christian Hamilton, who drew a walk of his own to force in the first run of the game.
  • With the bases still loaded, Sloan followed one batter later with a clutch two-RBI single to center field that gave the Stripes an early 3-0 leading heading into the second inning.
  • In the third inning, Pettit and Halstead led things off for the Stripes with back-to-back walks and Pfau followed with a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. During the next at-bat, Halstead used some heads-up base running to score on a steal of home to make it 4-0 in the Stripes' favor.
  • Two batters later, Pfau followed Halstead's example and stole home himself, giving the Stripes a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
  • The Stars finally broke through with their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when back-to-back walks to Green and JD Crisp and a hit-by-pitch to Davis loaded the bases for Masato Chilcutt, whose sac fly allowed Green to score and made it a 5-1 game.
  • On the next at-bat, Segura knocked a single to left field that brought Crisp across the plate and cut the deficit to three for the Stars.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back one-out singles from Gabe Howard and Weckman added another run for the Stripes, increasing their lead to 6-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, after Moss scored a run for the Stars on a bases-loaded wild pitch to make it 6-3, Crisp drew a walk to load the bases once again and back-to-back bases-loaded hit-by-pitches forced two more home for the Stars to make it a one run game.
  • Crisp then took advantage of another bases-loaded wild pitch to score the Stars' fourth run of the frame and tie the game, 6-6, before the Stripes escaped the inning.
  • Halstead led off the bottom of the eighth for the Stripes with a single before advancing to second on a ground out by Ford Thompson and stealing third. He then scored the final run of the game on Linkin Garcia's fielder's choice to give the Stripes a 7-6 victory.

Notable Information:

  • Braeden Weckman (1-0) earned the win in the contest for the Stripes after allowing just one hit, no runs and no walks in his one inning of relief.
  • Dylan Green (0-1) suffered the loss after coming in in relief in the seventh and giving up one run on two hits.
