Saloman Leads Hamilton High School Past Bishop Verot in NHSI Opener

CARY, N.C. – Logan Saloman went the distance on the mound for Hamilton High School (Chandler, Ariz.) and three players tallied RBIs in a 3-1 first-round victory over Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) at the USA Baseball National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance.

With the victory, Hamilton High School (1-0) advances to the quarterfinals of NHSI 2022 on Thursday. Bishop Verot (0-1) falls into the consolation bracket.

Both starting pitchers took time to settle into their opening game of the tournament, but they traded outs after the second inning. Saloman picked up the victory, finishing the day striking out four batters and giving up just three hits in the complete game. Aidan Knaak suffered the loss for Bishop Verot, giving up three runs on four hits. He also struck out four batters.

Offensively, Cooper Brass led Hamilton with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a run scored. Josh Tiedemann, Zach Wadas, and Prince Deboskie each tallied an RBI for the Huskies. Bishop Verot’s Maddix Simpson (1-for-3) was responsible for the lone Viking run.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Josiah Velazquez launched a triple to the right-field wall on the first pitch of the game and came around to score on an an RBI-groundout by Maddix Simpson to put Bishop Verot up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
  • Hamilton tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI-walk to Zach Wadas and then Prince Deboskie followed with an RBI-fielder’s choice to take a 2-1 lead.
  • With two on and two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Josh Tiedemann tallied an RBI-single up the middle to score Cooper Brass from second base as Hamilton extended its lead to 3-1.
  • With a runner on first and one out in the top of the seventh, Logan Saloman clinched the victory by inducing a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

NOTABLE INFORMATION

  • Bishop Verot starting pitcher Aidan Knaak suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in five innings pitched. Dylan Peck came on in relief and struck out two batters in a hitless relief appearance.
  • Logan Saloman earned the win, striking out four batters and surrendering just three hits and one run in the complete game effort.
  • Bishop Verot’s pitchers struck out six batters on the day.
