Champs NC Day Two Round Up

The National Team Championships in North Carolina continued on Wednesday, June 14, with the second day of the 17U age group at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Catch up on all the action ahead of of tomorrow's quarterfinals.

INDIANA BULLS BLACK 8, USA PRIME NATIONAL 17U 3

Offensive power combined with lights out pitching from Chase Wagner led the Indiana Bulls (1-1-0) to an 8-3 victory over USA Prime National 17U (1-1-0) in its second pool play game of the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

The scoring began early and often for the Bulls as its first two runs came across in the top of the first on singles from JD Stein and Jayce Lee. Lee would score as Griffin Tobias beat out a tight throw to first. USA Prime got on the board as Ty Southisene scored on a grounder from Derek Curiel. The Bulls tacked on two more in the second on three singles from Brayden Hibler, Thomas Lynch, and DJ Scheumann. The Bulls defense was all in to continue to maintain the lead as Stein laid out to catch a line drive to end the frame. Wagner was dominant on the mound, racking up back-to-back strikeouts in the fourth. USA Prime threatened in the later innings, loading the bases in the sixth, and a single from Curiel would tack on another. In a seventh inning relief effort, Rustin Rigdon, who was originally playing second, shut USA Prime down in the bottom of the frame to aid in the win.

Indiana Bulls Black will face Alpha Prime 24 for its third game of 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina, with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m. on Field 4. USA Prime National 17U will take on the Power Baseball 2024 Marucci/Blue Jays Scout Team at 11:00 a.m. on Field 3. Both. POWER BASEBALL 2024 MARUCCI 8, ALPHA PRIME 24 1

Cannon Feazell struck out six batters and allowed just three hits in 4.2 scoreless innings to lead Power Baseball (2-0-0) to an 8-1 victory over Alpha Prime (0-2-0) in its first game of day two action at the 2023 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Alpha Prime scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the opening frame, walking in a run on Power starter Kaden Smith, before Feazell entered in relief and held Prime off the scoreboard. Power Baseball drew four walks in the bottom of the second inning to plate its first run and then took the lead thanks to a Cooper Collins RBI single to left that set the score at 2-1 heading into the third frame. Power Baseball’s offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits. After a Kaiden Lopez single and a walk put runners on, Zach Hopper cranked an RBI single to center that extended the lead to 3-1. Jack Waddingham followed up with a single of his own, before Collins was hit by a pitch and pushed another run in. Talan Bell and Ty Head then recorded two consecutive two RBI singles to establish an 8-1 lead.

Collins, Head, and Bell each led Power Baseball with two RBIs on the day. Tyler Paul Wentworth recorded two base hits and Luke Baker supplied the lone RBI for Alpha Prime.

CANES NATIONAL 17U/NY METS SCOUT TEAM 1, KNIGHTS KNATION 0

Dante Nori delivered the walk-off shot in a pitcher’s duel to lift Canes National 17U/NY Mets Scout Team (1-0-1) over Knights Knation (1-1), 1-0, at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

The contest sat in a gridlock until the eighth inning, when Nori hit a walk-off single that brought in PJ Morlando to score the one and only run of the game for Canes National. Morlando was the designated runner on second as per the international tie-breaker rule, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Noah Franco. The Canes loaded the bases after an intentional walk to designated hitter Bryce Rainer, but it did not matter as Nori lined one to left for the Canes fourth and most important hit of the day.

Zach Swanson pitched six spectacular innings for Canes National, racking up 13 strikeouts through 19 batters faced. He allowed only one hit and one free pass with no runs scored. Camden Sunstrom also had an outstanding outing, giving up no runs on only two hits while collecting nine strikeouts for over six innings pitched for Knights Knation.

Canes National 17U/NY Mets Scout Team will next face Team Elite (0-2) at 10:45 a.m. at Stadium Field, while Knights Knation will kick off its next contest against Royals Scout Team at 10:45 a.m. on Field 2. ROYALS SCOUT TEAM 13, TEAM ELITE 4

Royals Scout Team (2-1-0) registered nine hits on the day, with Blake O’Brien finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs in a 13-4 victory over Team Elite in game three of pool play at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Six of the Royals’ runs came in the second inning. Team Elite would strike back with a back-to-back triple and single to bring the score to 7-4. The Royals would add two to make the score 8-4 with a two-run RBI double from Tytys Cissell to score O’Brien. The Royals rallied four more runs from several walks and a double from Xander Zumwalt to make the score 13-9.

Trey Snyder was another standout for Royals Scout Team, going 2-for-3 with one triple and an RBI. Zumwalt was also stout at the plate with three RBIs and one stolen base. England Sloan was the starting pitcher for Royals Scout Team, going 4.1 innings with two strikeouts.

Team Elite had a total of six strikeouts, three of those from starting pitcher Owen Hancock. Tate Sirmans went 3-for-3 on the day with two RBIs to lead the team’s offense.

Royals Scout Team will next face Knights Knation 17U National for its third game of pool play of the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina, with first pitch set for 10:45 a.m. at Coleman Field. Team Elite will next match up with Canes National 17U/NY Mets Scout Team on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. at Coleman Field. ALPHA PRIME 24 1, INDIANA BULLS BLACK 0

In a low-scoring pitcher’s duel, the combination of Ross Felder and Ishaan Khambal pitched seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts to power Alpha Prime 24 (1-2-0) in a 1-0 victory over Indiana Bulls Black (1-2-0).

The lone run in the game came in the first innings from an RBI single from Paul Valasquez, who drove in Rowan Kelly. The main action came from the showdown between Felder and Caden McCoy, who surrendered one earned run in all seven innings. Felder pitched 5.0 innings while giving up only one hit with six strikeouts. Caden McCoy threw 6.0 innings with three hits, one earned run, and eight strikeouts. The relief effort of Khambal was solid and sealed the win for the Prime, pitching 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.

Although the pitchers allowed minimal hits, Bryce Hibler had the lone hit for Indiana Bulls, while Charlie Bates, Ausin Ellis, and Valasquez all picked up one hit for Alpha Prime. Bates had the only extra base hit of the game with a double in the bottom of the fourth.

CANES NATIONAL 17U/NY METS SCOUT TEAM 8, TEAM ELITE 0

Canes National 17U/NY Mets Scout Team (2-0-1) punched in eight runs on seven hits to overpower Team Elite (0-3) 8-0 in its final game of pool play at the 17U Championships in North Carolina.

Canes National began its barrage in the third inning, the first run coming off a good piece of two-out hitting by Owen Plaino to drive in Dante Nori, who walked earlier in the inning. PJ Morlando’s triple to dead center plated Plaino and gave Canes an early 2-0 lead. Canes National continued to showcase their two-out offense with four consecutive singles in the fourth. Devin Fitz-Gerald had the first base hit and drove in Dean Moss, who walked earlier in the inning. Luke Costello delivered the next hit for the Canes to bring in Moss and Bryce Rainer to make it 5-0. Nori capped the inning off with a line drive single to score Costello and extend Canes’ lead by one. Three walks in succession in the fifth loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Carson Messina, who also obtained a free pass to make it 7-0. Cade Arrambide was the next batter and also drew a walk, making it 8-0 to run-rule Team Elite.

Jackson Sanders tossed five solid innings for Canes National, allowing only two hits and no runs scored. Plaino went 2-for-2 on the day, recording an RBI double and scoring a run as well for Canes. Costello gathered a two-RBI base knock and also scored. Moss went 1-for-1, walked two times, and came trotting home to contribute a run for the Canes.

Ariston Veasey went 1-for-2 on the day for Team Elite, pumping a double to center field while also throwing out a runner at second.

Canes National 17U/NY Mets Scout Team’s next opponent will be determined after the results of today’s final matchups of pool play. Team Elite will play in the consolation bracket of the tournament, as both games will be held on Thursday, June 15. POWER BASEBALL MARUCCI 6, USA PRIME 5

Ty Head went 2-for-3 with two base hits and an RBI as Power Baseball Marucci (3-0-0) defeated USA Prime (1-2-0), 6-5, in the final round of pool play at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

The two teams put up a combined six runs in the first inning, with Derek Curiel scoring on a fielding error for the first run for USA Prime in the top of the opening frame. With a runner on, Garrett Shull stepped to the plate and sent a drive over the right field wall for a two-run homer that established a 3-0 lead for Prime. Power Baseball responded in the bottom of the inning, collecting its first run after an RBI single from Thomas Bly. Two consecutive runs were then walked in, and the score evened at 3-3 as the teams headed into the second. Curiel picked up his second hit of the day to tally another run for USA Prime in the second, before Head collected his lone RBI of the game for Power, sending a single to right to even the score at 4-4. USA Prime regained the lead in the third, plating a run after a Power Baseball fielding error. Brodie Johnston responded for Power, tallying an RBI single in the fifth to tie things up. Two batters later, Brayden Toro supplied an RBI sac fly that gave Power a 6-5 lead.

Maddox McDougall threw 3.2 shutout innings in relief for Power Baseball, surrendering just one hit while striking out five. USA Prime reliever Calder Glassman struck out three batters in two innings of work.

ROYALS SCOUT TEAM 6, KNIGHTS KNATION 6

Knights Knation 17U National (1-1-1) registered seven hits while the Royal Scout Team (1-0-2) had 11 on the day to end in a 6-6 tie to wrap up the pool play portion of the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Two of the Knights' runs came in the second inning from a run walked in and a fielder’s choice. ​​All six of the Royals’ runs came in the third inning. Blake O’Brien opened the scoring in the third with an RBI single with a runner on first, followed by two singles and two doubles to add five runs on the board. John Pearson came through big in the fifth with a grand slam to left to tie up the ballgame.

Grant Hollister was hot in the Royals’ lineup, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Trey Snyder was also stout at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI and a stolen base. Royals Scout Team’s starting pitcher, Cole Gibler, pitched two innings and recorded four strikeouts. Tyler Wood came on in the fifth inning of a tied game and recorded three strikeouts to end the inning.

Ethan Surowiec helped lead Knight Knation's offense going 3-for-4 with a single and a double. The starting pitcher for the Knights, Bryce Navarre, went two innings deep with three strikeouts. Aiden Grab came on in relief in the third, going four innings and racking up six strikeouts.

EAST COAST SOX SCOUT 8, TOP TIER SELECT 1

Michael Ryan went 2-for-3 with a walk and led East Coast Sox Scout (2-1-0) to an 8-1 victory over Top Tier Select (0-3-0) in the final game of pool play at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Top Tier Select struck first in the first inning off an RBI double from Tomas Valincius. Six of East Coast Sox Scout’s runs came in the first inning. Tanner Waldrop started things off with a two-out two run RBI double to left, scoring Michael Ryan and Brett Moseley, and John Robicheaux extended the lead 6-1 with bases loaded as he reached on by error to score three. The Sox added two in the fourth when Tyrese Johnson hit a hard ground ball to third to score Gatlin Pitts, and Robicheaux later scored on a fielder’s choice.

Tanner Waldrop also led the East Coast Sox Scout’s offense with a 1-for-3 day with two RBsI. Gatlin Pitts and Eli Stephens each had a double on the day, and Pitts had a stolen base. East Coast Sox Scout’s starting pitcher, Matthew Storey, pitched four innings with three strikeouts. Top Tier Select had five hits on the day, with Tomas Valincius going 1-for-3 with an RBI. The starting pitcher for Top Tier, McCall BieMiller, went three innings deep with four strikeouts.

DULINS DODGERS 8, EXPOSURE 17U NATIONAL 1

Four Dulins Dodgers pitchers combined for a two-hit game and conceded only one run to lead Dulins Dodgers (3-0) past eXposure 17U National (1-2) in the final round of pool play at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Scoring started early at Coleman Field, as team eXposure tallied the first run of the ball game off a double steal, bringing home the leadoff batter Lukas Buckner. Dulins Dodgers evened things out in its half of the first due to a fielding error committed by the shortstop on a throw down to second, plating Kyle Branch who had reached base on a walk. The Dodgers broke things open in the home half of the second, with Kendyl Johnson scoring the Dodgers’ third run off a bases-loaded walk. A fielding error by the second baseman prolonged the inning and brought in Branch to make it 3-1. Michael Catalano tacked on a couple more runs off a ground ball up the middle, plating Owen Lee and Wyatt Sanford who both drew walks earlier in the inning to make it 5-1. Dulins Dodgers continued to add runs in the fourth thanks to a Kaleb Hester single that brought Sanford and Brooks Sartain around home to score. Zach Grigalis widened the Dulins Dodgers’ lead, hitting in Hester to make it 8-1.

Lee pitched a clean 3.2 innings for the Dodgers, giving up only one hit in the process. Sanford drew three walks on the day, scored twice, and drove in a run. Catalano and Hester each amassed a pair of RBIs, accounting for half of the team's runs. Buckner went 1-for-3 for eXposure and scored the team’s only run of the contest.

Dulins Dodgers will be seeded in the single-elimination playoff bracket and will face an opponent determined after the results of today’s final matchups of pool play. eXposure 17U National will await seeding to determine which bracket it will compete in, both games will be held on Thursday, June 15th, and will be streamed on USABaseball.TV. ELITE SQUAD BASEBALL 17U 6, 3N2 STICKS 17U BREWSTER/WHITE SOX SCOUT TEAM 4

Jonathan Fernandez pitched strong in relief to help Elite Squad Baseball (1-1-1) outlast 3n2 Sticks (0-3-0) in the final round of pool play at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

The scoring began for 3n2 Sticks in the first inning where it put up three runs on walks, a hit by pitch, a sac fly from Bo Jones, and a myriad of wild pitches. The first three runs of the ball game would be scored without 3n2 Sticks recording a hit. In the second, still hitless, Brenton Clark scored on another wild pitch to give 3n2 Sticks a four-run lead.

The first run for the Elite Squad came on a bases-loaded walk and the second run immediately followed via an RBI fielder’s choice from Luis Suarez. In the third, Elite Squad cut the run deficit to one, with a runner scoring on a dropped third strike. A sac bunt from Larry Rodriguez, a bunt single , and another bunt single from Ignacio Salaverria brought across the fifth run for Elite Squad to take the lead. The last run for the Elite Squad came on a passed ball.

Ethan Puig, Jose Lopez, and Dylan Howell were credited with the only three hits of the ball game for Elite Squad. On the other side, Cameron Carter and Christian Bobzin tallied the two hits for 3n2 Sticks. Mark Brissey was credited with the loss after allowing four earned runs on one hit, and seven walks. Jonathan Fernandez, the first Elite Squad pitcher out of the bullpen, will be credited with the victory after allowing no earned runs, on one hit, three strikeouts, and two walks.USA Elite Squad 17U and 3n2 Sticks 17U Brewster/White Sox Scout Team will await the end of pool play for seeding ahead of the bracket play portion of the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina. EAST COBB ASTROS 4, 2024 TEXAS TWELVE 1

Jack Myers went 1-for-2 with an RBI as East Cobb Astros (3-0-0) defeated Texas Twelve (1-1-1), 4-1 in six innings in the final game of pool play at the 17U National Team Championships in North Carolina

East Cobb began the game by plating three runs in the first inning.Two fielding errors by Texas Twelve put leadoff man Bryce Clavon at third base before Samuel Richardson singled to center to score the first run. A sacrifice fly followed by a wild pitch set the score 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first. Both defenses held strong until the third inning, when the Astros extended its lead after an error sent Noah Sheffield in to score and extend the lead to 4-0. Texas Twelve found its way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame, as an error sent Mason Jacob in to score after reaching with a leadoff single. No runs were scored in the final three innings as the contest ended in six innings due to the 2:15 time limit.

Texas Twelve reliever Blayne Lyne allowed just one run and struck out six batters in 4.2 innings pitched. Jordan Bright pitched the final three innings for East Cobb, recording three punch outs and allowing no runs. Erik Parker, Eli Hurt, Richardson, and Jack Myers all picked up RBIs for East Cobb.
