Athlete Safety: BASE
USA Baseball's zero-tolerance policy for any type of abuse within the sport of baseball.
In late 2018, USA Baseball launched BASE (Baseball Athlete Safety Education) as its zero-tolerance campaign for any type of abuse within the sport of baseball. Over the course of the last few years, we have seen abuse of minor athletes within the U.S. Olympic family come to the forefront. Too many athletes went unprotected from predators within their sport, which led to the creation of Senate Bill 534. Through SB534 and the governance of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, there are many policies now in place to ensure minor athlete well-being is at the forefront of every sport.
Four Components of BASE
Reporting
If you need to report an incident involving emotional, physical or sexual abuse, please click here to do so. Please note, that you may report anonymously, but anonymous reporting may make it difficult for USA Baseball to investigate or properly address allegations. If you are submitting a report please be as accurate and as thorough as possible.
With respect to reporting, USA Baseball holds a public-facing list of banned and suspended individuals within the sports of baseball and softball. Individuals on this list are identified as having disqualifying factors limiting them from participation in baseball. Further, we want to ensure that everyone within our game knows they are responsible for reporting any abuse or suspicion of abuse to the local authorities within 24 hours of discovering this information. To view the USA Baseball Ineligible List, click here.
The U.S Center for SafeSport accepts all reports of sexual abuse and child abuse within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement. Report here if you have reasonable suspicion of sexual misconduct or harassment, child abuse (including child sexual abuse), or intimate relationships involving an imbalance of power. Reports can also be made to the Center’s toll-free number: 833-5US-SAFE (587-7233).
Background Checks
USA Baseball's national service provider for background checks is JD Palatine. USA Baseball offers three types of background checks: standard, comprehensive, and medical professional. To view more information about USA Baseball's background check services, click here.
Minor Athlete Safety Policies (MAAPS)
The U.S. Center for SafeSport has developed model policies to be adopted by national governing bodies of sport. Where a national governing body fails to produce their own minor athlete safety policies to limit one on one interactions between minor athletes and participating adults, the model policies of the U.S. Center for SafeSport become the default. USA Baseball has developed its own BASE Minor Athlete Safety Policies (BASE MAAPPS) We encourage all baseball organizations to adopt our BASE MAAPPS to protect all constituents within their organization. Education and Training
While USA Baseball executive staff and national team personnel are required to complete the U.S. Center for SafeSport Core Courses to satisfy the educational requirements of SB534, USA Baseball has created two of its own Abuse Awareness online courses that are free for the general public. These courses will satisfy the requirement for all baseball organizations outside of USA Baseball’s covered individuals and its local affiliate organizations. Click here to take the USA Baseball Abuse Awareness for Adults or Abuse Awareness for Minors courses. Additional Parent and Minor Athlete abuse awareness training, as well as other training, are available through the U.S Center for SafeSport and can be found at safesporttrained.org.
