CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball’s 2026 15U National Team Training Camp Phase 1 kicked off on Thursday with a pair of intrasquad scrimmages at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Team Grey claimed a 4-1 victory over Team Light Blue in a game that featured stellar pitching, while Team Navy defeated Team Red in an offensive slugfest, 10-9.

Team Grey 4, Team Light Blue 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Zaylon Johnson opened the scoring for Team Grey in the top of the second when he smoked a ground ball single up the middle to score Greyson Wuis, putting Team Grey in front 1-0.
• Team Grey starting pitcher Max Kimbrell was dominant through the first three innings on the bump. The right-hander punched out three, walked one, and allowed only one hit in his scoreless outing.
• After Brody Brooks laced a two-out single in the top of the fourth, Team Grey struck again on an RBI double from Tyler Early to deep left. Another Johnson single and a Bryant Ju walk kept the rally going, but Team Light Blue escaped the bases-loaded jam down 2-0.
• Team Light Blue started a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the fifth when Jacob Reyes and Mason Miller notched back-to-back base knocks. Team Grey reliever Trey Vandergriff escaped with no damage, however, when he induced a groundout to end the frame.
• Team Grey loaded the bases to start the sixth on a pair of walks and a Team Light Blue error. Jackson McAneeley capitalized on the opportunity by working a 3-2 count and earning an RBI walk, before a hit-by-pitch pushed Team Grey’s lead to 4-0.
• Vandergriff found his groove in the bottom of the sixth, striking out the first two Light Blue batters to start the inning. The Georgia native then got a popout to the catcher to retire the side, capping off three scoreless innings in relief.
• Noah Vrzal looked extremely sharp in relief for Team Light Blue. The 6-foot-5 righty struck out the side on 15 pitches in the top of the seventh to keep his team within striking distance.
• Light Blue got on the board in the bottom of the seventh after Matti Di Maggio singled to right and stole his way to third. Luca Briggs drove Di Maggio home two batters later to cut Team Grey’s lead to 4-1, but that’s as far as the Light Blue comeback would go.

NOTABLE STATS

• Despite the loss, Team Light Blue outhit Team Grey 7-5 on the day.
• The Team Grey pitchers made up the difference in hits by walking only one batter, while the Light Blue pitching staff gave up six free passes.
• Johnson finished the game as the lone batter with a multi-hit performance. The Louisiana native collected two singles, one run, and one RBI.
• Leyton West notched the only extra-base hit of the game for Team Light Blue.
• Action on the basepaths was highlighted by stolen bases from Briggs, Di Maggio, and Early.

Team Navy 10, Team Red 9

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Joshua Park started the game off with a bang when he roped a leadoff double down the left field line for Team Navy. Park scored the first run of the game two batters later on an RBI groundout from Kingston George to give Team Red a 1-0 lead.
• Team Navy piled on two more runs in the second inning thanks to some chaos on the basepaths. Jonah Hargrave led off the inning with a walk, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch. AJ Juarez and JC Nunez followed with a pair of singles and induced a throwing error when they attempted a double steal. Juarez trotted home to put Navy up 3-0.
• The Team Red bats came alive in the bottom of the second when Ray Hunter hit a rocket to right field for a leadoff triple. Jesse Maddox immediately followed with a triple of his own to plate Red’s first run of the game, then scored on a balk to make it 3-2.
• Team Navy responded in the top of the third with a George walk and a Chris Cabrera double. Hargrave plated George with a hard groundout to make the score 4-2 Navy.
• Team Navy kept the offensive barrage going in the fifth with three hits, two walks, and three more runs. A two-run double off the bat of Tuck Richardson highlighted the effort as Navy pushed its lead to 7-2.
• Down five runs but not out, Team Red launched an epic comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Lucas Ota-Salas kicked things off with a leadoff triple, followed by an RBI single from Paris Head, who then scored on an RBI double from Jason Spray Jr. Hunter capped the inning off with his second hit of the ballgame, a two-run liner to left that cut the deficit to one run.
• Team Navy piled on four more runs in the top of the sixth, capped off by a two-RBI scorcher through the right side from Hargrave that put Navy in front for good. Team Red scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, including another RBI base-knock from Spray, but the final inning was canceled due to rain and Navy prevailed 10-9.

NOTABLE STATS

• The teams combined for a whopping 20 hits in the six inning game, with Team Red holding an 11-9 over Navy.
• Enzi Otieku delivered the best pitching performance of the game, tossing three innings with four punchouts and only one walk.
• Seven different hitters notched extra-base hits: Cabrera, Park, Richardson, Spray, Hunter, Maddox, and Ota-Salas. Hunter was the only batter to record two extra-base-hits with his double and triple.
• Ota-Salas led all hitters with three base knocks on the game and tied Hunter with five total bases. He also scored two runs for Team Red.
• Hargrave topped all batters with four runs driven in. He also stole two bases, which tied him for the game lead with Juarez.
