CARY, N.C. - The Stars team wrapped up the 2018 18U National Team Trials on a strong note with a six-inning 9-1 victory over the Stripes in the final game of the series on Thursday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
Kendall Williams (Olive Branch, Miss.) tossed a dominant game for the Stars, giving up just four hits and no earned runs while walking just one in his 4.1-inning start.
Behind that start, the Stars offense finally got things going in game four. A five-run second inning got the Stars on the board and in firm control of the contest early on.
The inning got started with a leadoff single from Joe Naranjo (Chino, Calif.), but all five runs came with two outs. After a fly out and a pop up, Ethan Hearn (Mobile, Ala.), Gunnar Henderson (Selma, Ala.) and Anthony Volpe (Watchung, N.J.) all collected RBI with a single, double and triple, respectively, to give the Stars a 5-0 lead.
That score would stand until the fifth inning, when the Stars widened the gap courtesy of a Sammy Faltine (Richmond, Texas) sac fly that plated Pete Crow-Armstrong (Sherman Oaks, Calif.).
The Stripes finally broke through with an answer in the bottom half. An error allowed one run to cross to make it a 6-1 game.
In the very next frame though, the Stars posted another big inning to put the game out of reach for good. The squad pushed three more across for the final score of 9-1.
Nine different players collected hits for the Stars in the game, including Hearn, who finished 1-for-1 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored. On the other side of the diamond, Masyn Winn (Kingwood, Texas) scored the Stripes' lone run and finished 1-for-2 on the day.
Thursday's contest wrapped up a four-game series between the two teams and a five game trials process that also included a game between the 18U Trials squad and the 2018 Collegiate National Team. The Stars claimed the victory on the day but the Stripes won the series 3-1.
Following the completion of the 2018 18U National Team Trials, the final 20-man 18U National Team roster will be announced later in the fall. Team USA will then come together in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for training before competing in the COPABE "AAA" Pan American Championships from November 23-December 2 in Panama City, Panama.
