10U Futures Invitational Day 1 Recap

There was one no-hitter and two ties on the first day of game action

DURHAM, N.C. - Day one of the USA Baseball 10U Futures Invitational kicked off at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. on Thursday with the first games of pool play. After sixteen games, the ATP National, Alamo Drillers, and Five Star Tigers ended day one with a perfect 2-0 record. The Florida Chargers, Parkview Panthers, and TBSA Patriots are all tied for the fourth qualifying position with a 1-0-1 record.
Day two will start off at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, June 23, with the Alamo Drillers taking on the Five Star Tigers. Stay tuned to USABaseball.com for live scoring.

Game 1: Five Star Tigers 16, STL Spikes 0

The Five Star Tigers' (Fla.) offense was in full force in their first action at this year's 10U Futures Invitational. The Tigers scored a run in each inning, securing the win by a score of 16-0 over the STL Spikes. The Tigers were led by Gabe Gonzalez, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI, as well as Ty Cobb who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. The winning pitcher was JJ Jennings who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings while recording two strikeouts.

Game 2: Team Elite 5, TBSA Patriots 5

Field eight showcased a thrilling matchup between TBSA Patriots (Fla.) and Team Elite (Ga.) that ended in a 5-5 tie due to a two hour time limit ruling. In the bottom of the sixth, Team Elite loaded the bases with one out but TSBA's Madox Land was able to record the final two outs and escape the jam. Offensively the game's leaders were Colby Redding of TBSA, who had a two-RBI base hit, and Team Elite's Charlie Wilcox, who went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Game 3: LA Xtreme 7, Louisville Sting 1

The LA Xtreme (Calif.) and the Louisville Sting (Ky.) faced off on field five in the third game of the day. LA Xtreme jumped out to an early lead in the game and never looked back, starting its tournament with a 7-1 victory. Shane Florez led the way offensively and defensively, recording a two-RBI single and getting the win on the mound while tallying four strikeouts.

Game 4: Alamo Drillers 11, CBA 0

The Alamo Drillers (Texas) defeated CBA 11-0 in their first pool play matchup of the 10U Futures Invitational. Gavin Schlotterback led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. The winning pitcher in the game was Ty Hawkings who tossed four one-hit innings while striking out two.

Game 5: San Diego Show 12, Rawlings Stars Nationals 4

San Diego Show (Calif.) finished with 12 runs on 15 hits in its first game of pool play. Elijah Selga had a whopping five RBI when he cleared the fence with a bomb and then legged out an inside-the-park home run for the Show. Cameron Cole went 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Rawlings Stars Nationals (S.C.). Gunner Alm finished with eight strikeouts for Rawlings.

Game 6: ATP Baseball 1, NJ Hurricanes, 0

A no-hitter was thrown in game six of the 10U Futures Invitational by Jaden Engels, who went all six innings and tallied two strikeouts for ATP Baseball (Ariz.). The lone run of the game was scored by Enrique Guerra on a passed ball by the catcher in the fourth inning.

Game 7: Top Tier Americans 11, Traction Canes Black, 1

The Top Tier Americans (Calif.) recorded the 11-1 over Traction Canes Black (La.) in game seven. Top Tier was led by TJ Ford who went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the contest. Traction Canes Black's only run came off the bat of Kolby Hunter. The winning pitcher for the Top Tier Americans was Thomas Bly, who stuck out three over two innings of work.

Game 8: Florida Chargers 9, Parkview Panthers 9

One of the most exciting games of the day featured 24 combined hits, only one error and 18 combined runs resulting in a 9-9 tie. The Florida Chargers (Fla.) were led by Juan Gainous who went 2-for-2 with one RBI, while the Parkview Panthers (Ga.) were led offensively by Tyler Anglin also went 2-for-2 and had recorded RBI in the contest.

Game 9: Alamo Drillers 18, STL Spikes 1

The Alamo Drillers (Texas) exploded for 18 runs in their second 10U Futures Invitational game of the day. The Drillers were again led by Gavin Schlotterback who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Cedrick Harris Jr. also added to the offensive outpu, going 1-for-1 with two RBI. The winning pitcher for the Drillers was Chris Sampson.

Game 10: Louisville Sting 2, TBSA Patriots 1

Game 10 was a close matchup resulting in a 2-1 victory for the TBSA Patriots over the Louisville Sting. The Stings' lone run came in the third and the Patriots responded with two runs of their own in the fourth inning. The Patriots' pitching was strong for the duration of the game with Andreas Alvarez leading the way. He threw 5.1 scoreless innings while recording four strikeouts.

Game 11: Team Elite 8, LA Xtreme 6

Both Team Elite and LA Xtreme capitalized on 11 hits apiece in game 11, but Team Elite managed to get the upper hand and came away with a 8-6 victory. Joshua Barnes was the top man offensively for Team Elite, going 2-for-3 with a single, a triple and two RBI. In the other dugout, Cole Bernstein also went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the way offensively for LA Xtreme. The winning pitcher was Team Elite relief pitcher Coleman Lewis.

Game 12: Five Star Tigers 5, CBA 0

A strong combined pitching attack helped Five Star Tigers prevail in game 12 with a 5-0 victory over CBA. Pitchers Ty Cobb, Gabe Gonzalez and Caden Worbington gave up a combined four hits, one walk and struck out five in the shutout effort. As a team, the Tigers were able to draw five walks throughout the game, which allowed them to score five runs while only tallying two hits in the contest.

Game 13: Florida Chargers 5, San Diego Show 4

A close 5-4 matchup between the San Diego Show and Florida Chargers resulted in a win for the Chargers despite the Show rallying late. The Show scored one run in the top half of the sixth to bring the deficit to only one run but were ultimately halted by Chargers pitcher Carmani Boozer who captured the save. Offensively the Chargers were led by David Delpino who finished 1-for-2 with 2 RBI in the contest.

Game 14: Top Tier Americans, 8 NJ Hurricanes 1

Julius Pfau and Kaden Whitecavage both went 1-for-2 with two RBI for Top Tier Americans in their 8-1 win over NJ Hurricanes in game 14. The Americans used five pitchers in the game and only gave up one hit to the Hurricanes' Mario Magana who ended the game 1-for-3.

Game 15: ATP Baseball 9, Traction Canes Black 5

ATP Baseball ended day one of the 10U Futures Invitational with a victory, taking down Traction Canes Black 9-5. ATP's offense had a balanced approach with six players recording hits and tallying eight walks as a team. The winning pitcher was Yee Andrugh for ATP. Despite the loss, Traction Canes Black's Sawyer Pruitt had himself a day, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Game 16: Parkview Panthers 9, Rawlings Stars Nationals 3

The final game of the day was a winning effort by the Parkview Panthers as they defeated the Rawlings Stars Nationals 9-3. The Panthers ended their day 1-0-1 with a little help from Evan Brown who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Landon Brooks was also strong at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Rawlings Stars Nationals received five of their seven hits from Tyler Lomas and Jayce Cook.
