Stars Come From Behind to Steal Third Game of Training Camp

Atticus Arnold hit a walk-off single in the 6-3 victory

The third game of the 12U National Team Training Camp featured multiple lead changes and several standout performances, with the Stars ultimately prevailing 6-3 in eight innings of action. The victory gives the Stars a 2-1 edge heading into the final day of training camp tomorrow.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jacob Woods made quick work of the Stars in the top of the first, retiring the side on eight pitches. Woods recorded three straight groundouts in his lone inning on the bump.
  • The Stripes drew first blood in the top of the second thanks to the heads-up play of Maverick Harwood, who laced a single to right field to board the bases. Harwood proceeded to steal second base, take third on a passed ball, and score on an error to put the Stripes up 1-0.
  • Callen Bruesch started the game on the mound for the Stripes and cruised through two scoreless innings of work. The young southpaw struck out two batters, walked none, and allowed only one hit to the Stars.
  • The Stars finally broke through in the top of the third when William Rezabek smoked a two-out double to give the home team a runner in scoring position. Taz Tulowitzki capitalized on the momentum one batter later, driving in Rezabek with a liner to right and evening the score at 1-1.
  • A double off the bat of Greyson Mayo granted the Stars another scoring opportunity in the fourth. Two fielder’s choices and a walk later, the home squad had a 2-1 advantage.
  • Carver Brown took the mound for the Stars in the fourth and shut down the Stripes for two consecutive innings. The 5-foot-10 righty overpowered hitter after hitter as he set down six straight with one punchout.
  • The Stars lead wouldn’t hold for long though, as the Stripes rebounded in the sixth with a two-run rally. After a walk and hit-by-pitch put two on with no outs, Cruz Maggard roped a single up the middle to bring around the tying run. Noah Dent followed with a go-ahead sac fly that put the Stars in front with six outs to go.
  • The Stars offense suffered two quick outs to begin the bottom of the sixth, but a rally ensued when Greyson Mayo and Jonathan Pierre hit back-to-back singles. Matthew Craig drove home Mayo with a rocket double to right field to tie the game.
  • It all came down to the bottom of the seventh at Thomas Brooks Park. Jaxon Knox worked a huge walk to leadoff the inning, and Trae Dunford delivered a clutch sacrifice bunt to move him to second. Atticus Arnold delivered the knockout blow when he shot a single down the first base line to send Knox home and secure victory for the Stars.
  • Despite the conclusion of the game, the teams played out the rest of the inning. The Stars piled on two more runs to finish with a 6-3 victory.
