PEORIA, Ariz. - Hunter Watkins guided Legacy Baseball Group Gold to a 1-0 win against USA Prime American in Tuesday afternoon's Game of the Day at the 16U National Team Championships Arizona.
Watkins, a 6-foot-8 right-hander, scattered three hits across four scoreless innings of work. The Simi Valley, California, native showed tremendous command throughout his start and tossed 40 of his 47 pitches for strikes.
Legacy Baseball Group Gold jumped out to an early lead behind a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matthew Churchill in the opening frame, which proved to be enough despite a pair of hits apiece of USA Prime American's Cooper Brass and Collin Masco.
Weinbach collected the save for Legacy Baseball Group Gold after he delivered three shutout innings to close the game. Grady Maples tossed a complete game and surrendered just five hits while striking out seven, but was charged with the loss.
Legacy Baseball Group Gold (1-0) returns to play at 7 a.m. MT on Wednesday against CCB National (0-0-1).
