TAINAN, Taiwan - Brenden Lewis (Santee, Calif.) pitched five scoreless innings and hit a three-run home run to lead Team USA past Australia, 10-0, in the first game of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup, on Friday, at ASPAC B in Tainan, Taiwan.


Lewis earned the win after allowing just one hit in five scoreless innings on the mound and striking out four. Australia's Daniel Thwaites (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in 3.1 innings.

Lewis also led the U.S. offensively after recording two hits, including a double and a home run, and four RBIs. Josiah Hartshorn (Anaheim, Calif.) and Jack Ruckert (Baton Rouge, La.) added a home run and drove in a pair of runs each for Team USA, while Rashad Hayes (Oakland, Calif.) scored two runs.

  • Team USA jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second after Rashad Hayes (Oakland, Calif.) scored on a dropped strike three from Australia, before Brenden Lewis (Santee, Calif.) hit a two-out double to left to score Sebastian Segura (Spring, Texas).
  • The U.S. added to its lead in the home half of the third as Gavin Fien (Temecula, Calif.) crossed home on a one-out double to right-center by Josiah Hartshorn (Anaheim, Calif.).
  • Hartshorn scored two pitches later as Jack Ruckert (Baton Rouge, La.) hit a line drive over the second baseman's head to give the red, white, and blue a 4-0 advantage.
