Light Blue and Navy Pick Up Wins on Second Day of PDP League Action

Light Blue and Navy earn first wins on day two of games

TEAM LIGHT BLUE TAKES DOWN TEAM RED IN STRONG 6-3 PERFORMANCE

CARY, N.C. - Kolt Myers went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI but Team Red fell short against Team Light Blue in a 6-3 defeat in the third game of the 2023 Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) League at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

With the victory, Team Light Blue increases its record to 1-0-1 while Team Red’s record evens at 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ivan Luciano opened the scoring for Team Light Blue with a bases-loaded walk. Caleb Bonemer then made it 2-0 when he brought in Noah Franco on a fielder’s choice.
  • Team Red swiftly responded in the second when Kolt Myers made it a one-run game, driving in Conrad Cason on a hard-hit single up the middle.
  • Bryce Rainer evened the score in the top of the third with a one-run ground-rule double that hopped over the left field fence.
  • Team Light Blue pulled ahead in the fifth when PJ Morlando and Charlie Bates scored on a single to right center by Slade Caldwell. Caldwell then crossed home to make it 5-2 when Brock Thompson reached first on a throwing error by shortstop.
  • Team Red attempted a late comeback in the top of the sixth with Michael Mullinax scoring on a fielding error to bring the score to 5-3. The team was able to put runners on second and third but the frame came to an end when Maximo Martinez struck out swinging.
  • Caleb Bonemer solidified the win for Team Light Blue in the bottom of the seventh when he hit a deep fly ball to center field to reach base and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Connor Shouse to secure the 6-3 win.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Slade Caldwell led Team Light Blue’s offense with a 1-for-2 day with two RBIs.
  • Ivan Luciano was also strong with the bat, reaching base on a walk and then bringing in a run on a single.
  • For Team Red, Kolt Myers paved the way at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI and stolen base.
  • Dylan Jordan (1-0) came on in the fifth inning of a tied game and shut out Team Red to earn the win.
  • Team Red’s Ryan Sloan (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up three earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched.

TEAM NAVY HOLDS TEAM GRAY TO ONE HIT IN 4-0 VICTORY

Hayden Federico went 2-for-2 with two base hits and an RBI to lead Team Navy to a 4-0 win over Team Gray on day two of the 2023 Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) League at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

With the win, Team Navy improves to 1-1-0 while Team Gray falls to 0-1-1 in PDP League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Gray squad picked up its lone hit in the contest in the top of the first with Konnor Griffin singling to left.
  • Erik Parker tripled in the bottom of the opening frame to put a runner in scoring position for Navy, but Team Gray starting pitcher Joshua Whritenour recorded his first strikeout of the day to end the inning before any runs could go up on the board.
  • Team Navy was able to score the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning. A wild pitch sent Kaiden Lopez in to score the first run before Hayden Federico hit a single that scored a second and provided Navy with a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the third, Jaxon Walker drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the Navy lead to 3-0.
  • Gray outfielder Derek Curiel managed to draw a leadoff walk in the sixth inning and steal his way to third base, but was ultimately left stranded thanks to the efforts of the Team Navy defense and reliever Ethan Schiefelbein.
  • Team Navy added another run in the bottom of the seventh after Levi Clark reached on a triple and was sent home courtesy of a sac fly by Kaiden Lopez.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Navy pitcher Tague Davis threw two innings in relief and struck out three of the seven batters he faced while allowing no hits.
  • Erik Parker, Kaiden Lopez, and Jaxon Walker each recorded RBIs for Team Navy.
  • Derek Curiel finished the day with three stolen bases for the Gray squad.
