CARY, N.C. – In game four of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp’s Stars vs. Stripes series at the National Training Complex, the Stars delivered a statement performance by erupting for 12 runs in a dominant 12-0 victory over the Stripes. The Stars improve to 2-1-1 in the series while the Stripes move to 1-2-1.
With the series tied heading into the contest, both teams entered with momentum and motivation. But by the time the final out was recorded, it was clear who owned the evening.
The Stars wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the top of the second inning, Zion Rose (Louisville) cracked a double down the right-field line, bringing home Drew Burress (Georgia Tech) for the game’s first run after he led off the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on Daniel Cuvet’s (Miami) outfield single.
With Cuvet and Rose in scoring position, Tyler Bell (Kentucky) grounded out to short to allow another run to score and make it 2-0.
An inning later, Lucas Moore (Louisville) led off with a double and reached third on a groundout, allowing AJ Gracia (Virginia) to bring him home with a clutch double to right field, driving him in and stretching the lead to three. The Stars were executing in every phase—stringing together hits, taking the extra base, and manufacturing runs with smart situational hitting.
In the fourth, two runs were added to the board due to a modified scoring system, which is used to achieve load management and limit potential injury.
The Stars never let up in the final frames of the game as they scored a combined seven runs across the sixth and seventh innings.
After Burress led off the sixth with a triple for his second extra-base hit of the day, Mulivai Levu (UCLA) scored him with an RBI double to left field to spark a five-run inning. Cuvet and Rose loaded the bases up on one out for the Stars, and the final three runs of the frame were added on due to the modified scoring system.
In the seventh with the bases loaded following a pair of walks and hit-by-pitch, Roch Cholowsky (UCLA) sent a deep fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly to score another run for his squad. Once again, two more runs were tacked on to the scoreboard due to the modified scoring system.
Burress, Moore, Chris Rembert (Auburn), and Rose led all players offensively with two hits apiece, while Burress, Cuvet, and Rose each crossed home plate twice.
While the offense lit up the scoreboard, the Stars’ pitching staff quietly put together one of the best performances of the series. Ethan Kleinschmit (Oregon State) and Ryan Marohn (NC State) combined for seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and yielding just two walks. Tague Davis (Louisville) managed to show off his arm for the Stripes by closing out the game with 1.1 hitless innings.
