Pitching dominates day three of PDP League

CLAVON TRIPLES TWICE AS TEAM NAVY NO-HITS TEAM LIGHT BLUE IN 6-4 VICTORY

Bryce Clavon went 2-for-3 with two triples and an RBI as Team Navy Blue recorded a no-hitter and took down Team Light Blue 6-4 on day three of 2023 Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) League at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

With the win, Team Navy moves to 2-1-0, while Team Light Blue falls to 1-1-1 in PDP League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Team Navy got the day started by plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Jaxon Walker drew a leadoff walk and Bryce Clavon followed it up by sending him home with an RBI triple to the right field corner.
  • A throwing error on the play by Light Blue allowed Bryce Clavon to score and establish the early 2-0 lead.
  • Team Light Blue responded in the bottom of the frame with Charlie Bates coming in to score thanks to a sac fly from Burke-Lee Mabeus. Light Blue seemed to be in prime position to tie the game, but Slade Caldwell was caught stealing third and Navy starting pitcher Johnny King recorded his first strikeout to end the first and preserve the 2-1 lead.
  • Bryce Clavon continued to supply offense to the Navy squad, hitting his second triple of the day in the top of the third. Talan Bell then walked before attempting to steal second when a throwing error by Light Blue scored Clavon and put Bell on third.
  • Levi Clark picked up an RBI on the next play, singling to send Talan Bell home and set the score at 4-1 in favor of the Navy squad.
  • In the bottom of the third, Charlie Bates hit a sac fly to center that brought in a run for Light Blue and narrowed the Navy lead to 4-2.
  • A pitcher’s duel ensued, led by Light Blue reliever Noah Franco’s three punch outs across the next two frames. The Light Blue squad put runners in scoring position in the fourth, but pitcher Felix Ong and the Navy defense held strong to preserve the no-hitter.
  • After two scoreless innings by both teams, Talan Bell drew another walk in the sixth and was moved to third base two batters later when Tague Davis picked up his second double of the contest for Team Navy. A wild pitch then sent Bell in to score and provided Navy with a 5-2 lead.
  • Connor Shause and Slade Caldwell each drew walks in the bottom of the sixth. An error in the Navy outfield allowed each runner to score and put together a 5-4 score.
  • Team Navy went up by two in the top of the seventh when Hayden Federico led off with a single and eventually scored as a result of a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
  • Light Blue came up seeking its first hit and a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Navy closer Kaiden Lopez shut the door, picking up two strikeouts and forcing a ground out to secure the no-hitter.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Trey Snyder went 2-for-3 with a single and double for Team Navy.
  • Charlie Bates and Burke-Lee Mabeus each collected RBIs for Team Light Blue.
  • Both Johnny King and Kaiden Lopez picked up two strikeouts in their hitless appearances on the mound for Team Navy.

TEAM RED DEFEATS TEAM GRAY 2-1 IN LOW-SCORING AFFAIR

Despite Derek Curiel’s dominant plate performance, Team Gray fell to Team Red in a 2-1 defeat in the sixth game of the 2023 PDP League at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

With the triumph, Team Red collects its second PDP League win and boosts its record to 2-1 while Team Gray falls to 0-2-1 on the week.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game got off to a swift start with Team Gray striking first in the top of the first inning when Derek Curiel tripled to center and scored on a ground out RBI by Carter Johnson.
  • Team Red refused to be behind for long and responded in the bottom of the second with a run of its own on an RBI single by Cade Arrambide to bring home Owen Paino. The frame came to an abrupt end when Team Gray was able to field a triple play and retire the side.
  • Manny Marin took advantage of a passed ball after reaching base on a walk and scored the game winning run for Team Red in the third, bringing the score to 2-1.
  • Team Gray attempted a comeback in the fifth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Conrad Cason struck out two batters to end the inning and escape the jam unscathed.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Cade Arrambide performed well at the plate for Team Red, going 1-for-2 and driving in one of the team’s two runs.
  • For Team Gray, Derek Curiel stood out on offense, finishing the game 2-for-3 with two hits and the sole run of the day for Team Gray.
  • Dane Moehler (1-0) came on in the third inning of a one-run game and struck out one to hold off Team Gray and earn the win.
  • Relief pitcher Schuyler Sandford (0-1) was credited with the loss for Team Gray after giving up one run in two innings.
