CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball’s 2026 16U/17U National Team Development Program opened its competition slate on Tuesday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Team Navy claimed a 6-2 victory over Team Red, while Team Grey defeated Team Light Blue 8-2.

NAVY 6, RED 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The first two innings went scoreless as Team Red starter Kohen Poplin and Team Navy starter Parker Klug each tossed two shutout innings. The pair combined for seven strikeouts in their starts.
• Team Navy broke through in the top of the third when Derek Vazquez scored on a pickoff attempt at first base to take a 1-0 lead.
• Navy added to its advantage in the fourth after loading the bases on an error, a single, and a walk. Chase Fillman then drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 2-0.
• Team Red responded in the bottom half of the inning as Grant Arnold reached after being hit by a pitch before Lennex Minor lined an RBI triple to left field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
• Kensen Johnson led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and Rylan Jenkins moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Johnson later stole third and scored on a Team Navy error, tying the game at 2-2.
• Team Navy reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back walks and an error loaded the bases for Isaias Torres, who launched a 397-foot grand slam to right-center field to give Navy a 6-2 advantage.
• Team Red was unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, and Team Navy secured the 6-2 victory.

NOTABLE STATS

• Aiden Kearney led all batters with two hits.
• Francis Conners-Schmid and Klug tied for a game-high four strikeouts in their scoreless outings.
• Torres drove in a game-high four runs with his seventh-inning grand slam.
• Cason Borchardt and Poplin each recorded three strikeouts.
• Daxton Price, Conners-Schmid, Klug, and Poplin all tossed scoreless outings.

GREY 8, LIGHT BLUE 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Noah Jarolimek got off to a hot start for Team Grey, launching a solo home run to center field in the top of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead.
• Designated hitter Keona Barraza led off the second inning by crushing a line drive double to right field. Kameron Cox followed with a ground ball single to right, scoring Barraza from second to extend the lead 2-0.
• Team Light Blue scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Cooper Holland drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a defensive miscue. Macgraw VanWormer followed with a line drive single to bring Holland home.
• Jarolimek led off the top of the third with a walk before Brady Rallo launched a pop fly into left field, and both runners advanced into scoring position on the throw. Team Grey’s third run of the day scored after Barraza lasered a line drive to second, reaching first on a defensive misplay and driving in Jarolimek.
• Team Grey tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth, extending the lead to 5-1. Carter Nash and Landon King drew back-to-back walks to open the inning before executing a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. Nash was thrown out at home while King advanced to third on a Jarolimek fielder's choice. Mateo Mier stepped to the plate with runners on the corners before Jarolimek stole second. He then lined a single to center, scoring both runners.
• After holding Team Grey to a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth, Team Light Blue got one back in the bottom frame to cut the lead to 5-2. Cylis Rainey showed strong plate discipline to draw a walk, before advancing to second on a passed ball and eventually scoring on a Tristin Gaines single.
• In the top of the sixth, Team Grey extended its lead to 7-2. Nash led off the inning with a triple, then scored on a line drive single from King.
• Maddox Bryant drew a walk, then both after runners advanced into scoring position, King came home on a Light Blue error.
• Team Grey completed a scoreless bottom half of the inning before plating the squad’s eighth and final run of the day in the top of the seventh. Barraza opened the inning with a line drive single, then advanced around the base paths on a defensive miscue to eventually cross home plate.

NOTABLE STATS

• Gavin Chakar led all pitchers with five strikeouts on the day in his two innings of work.
• Team Grey’s pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run on the day.
• Jarolimek led the game in runs scored with three.
• Barraza and VanWormer both recorded a multi-hit day; Barraza went 2-for-4 and VanWormer turned in a 2-for-3 outing.
