NHSI Day Two Consolation Recaps

Catch up on all the action around the consolation slate at the NHSI

Four teams notch their first wins of the 13th annual National High School tournament at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Quality pitching highlighted each of the consolation games while an offensive outburst allowed Nolensville to power past Delbarton on day two.

Nolensville 10, Delbarton 1

Nolensville (Nolensville, Tenn.) got off to a fast start in its consolation game against Delbarton (Morristown, N.J.), scoring a run in the first and then exploding for five more in the second. Singles from Tanner Jackson, Jimmy Marzullo and Griffin Hendrickson fueled the early rally. The Knights struck again in the fifth when Kael Barney drove in two runs and Hendrickson recorded his second RBI single of the day. On the mound, Parker Vandercook was masterful for Nolensville, allowing only one run on one hit in 4.2 innings pitched. The Northwestern commit punched out seven batters in a commanding victory for the Knights.

Edmond Memorial 6, Regis Jesuit 1

Laird Williams pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts and just one run allowed to carry Edmond Memorial (Edmond, Okla.) to a 6-1 win over Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.). Williams got significant run support immediately in the win, as the Bulldogs put up three runs in the top of the first on Koen Isaacson and Weston Zerr's RBI singles. Regis Jesuit got on the board on an RBI ground out in the fourth, but Williams locked back in and finished off his complete game to secure the win.

Gloucester Catholic 4, Wakefield 3

Gloucester Catholic (Gloucester City, N.J.) held off Wakefield (Wakefield, N.C.) 4-3 to secure its first win of the NHSI. The Wolverines struck first with an RBI double from Thomas Piscorik in the first inning, but the Rams plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Wakefield responded in the fourth and fifth innings on a sacrifice fly by by Ethan Wisler and an RBI double by Ben Dudash, and looked to rally in the seventh when Hunter Lentz drew a leadoff walk, but was unable to do so. Both relievers, Brennan Danner (Gloucester) and Sam Piscorik (Wakefield) had strong outings as they both turned in scoreless outings with a combined seven strikeouts.

Tampa Jesuit 4, Aquinas 3

Tampa Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) topped Aquinas (San Bernardino, Calif.), 4-3, behind a dominant performance from Wilson Andersen in Thursday’s consolation match at the National High School Invitational. After suffering a 2-0 defeat on day one, the Tigers bounced back and fired on all cylinders to move to 1-1 on the week. Tampa Jesuit scored a run apiece the first pair of innings, as a two-out infield single by Andersen and a two-out RBI double by Jay Kirchner made it 2-0 after two. Consecutive two-out RBI base knocks by Andersen and Hudson Rivera scored two more runs for the Tigers in the third until Aquinas answered in the sixth with a two-RBI single from Orlando Oates. Ben Burke entered in relief in the seventh and shut the door for the Tigers to earn the save and secure a 4-3 victory. Andersen set the tone from the get-go, allowing only two hits through the first five innings. The Mississippi State commit compiled six strikeouts through six innings pitched and go 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
