For the first time since 2015-16, USA Baseball’s National Team Championships Arizona saw a repeat winner as TB SoCal Evoshield downed Trosky / Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team, 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
After winning 16U gold in 2026, TB SoCal Evoshield became the first program since CBA Marucci (17U, 2015-2016) to go back-to-back as the champs of champs, securing consecutive gold medals in 2025 and 2026.
TB SoCal plated four runs on six hits, led by a 2-for-3 headlining performance by third baseman Owen Goulet.
In addition to his two hits, Goulet executed a perfect steal of home in the second inning as he raced down the third base line and slid in safely to put an exclamation point on his electric play.
“Well, at first, he (head coach Benny Bonilla) was like, 'You want to go?’ I was like, 'Yeah, give me it,’ and I started to go. He goes, 'No, no, no,’ but I'm already there. Luckily, it was a little curveball in the dirt and I got in there, but it was a close one,” said Goulet.
Despite coach Bonilla’s hesitation within the moment, he knew at the end of it there was no doubt he was sending Goulet – and that he was gonna be safe.
“There wasn't going to be an out. He was going to be safe. Our kids don't play scared, they play scared not to fail,” said Bonilla.
Throughout the high-flying week for Goulet, he piled up a tournament-leading 12 hits, with his swing being consistent regardless of the occasion.
“My approach [at bat] has really been thinking oppo. [The pitcher] was working away most of the game, so going oppo, staying inside the ball, and working the other way was my approach at the plate,” Goulet added.
His offensive performance complimented starting pitcher Cole Toomey’s stellar effort on the mound, twirling 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball while adding three strikeouts.
“[My] mindset was just go out there and throw strikes, not try to do too much, and have my defense help me out,” said Toomey. “I had my defense back me up when I was pitching on the mound, and it just felt good.”
As Toomey started off strong on the mound, head coach Bonilla’s mentality was to pass the baton off to the next man, as the team used five different pitchers, which Bonilla says was all a part of the plan.
“I’m really happy for the guys. I wanted to make sure every player got on the field somehow today. I got every pitcher that was available on the mound and we didn't have many subs. Whoever was here we ran with and it ended up being a great day,” said Bonilla.
Though the pitching rotation is unconventional, Toomey feels like the strategy from his coaching staff is why they were set up for success. “Benny knows how to work it out, space off the pitching, not do too much,” he said. “The coaching is phenomenal… it was just a big team effort right there.”
With five pitchers in use to team up for the championship shutout, it was none other than Goulet who heard his name called to record the final out in the top of the seventh.
“I wanted to go right after the hitter and use the fastball. When I got it by him, I couldn't even tell you the feeling – it was so awesome. Everyone coming out, hugging and then the dog pile was pretty awesome,” he added.
The road to the top at Champs Arizona is no easy feat. As TB SoCal now becomes just the second team to repeat in the same age group, coach Bonilla credits the program as a whole to his team's success on the biggest stage.
"A win like this is just a reflection of our program and having kids that maybe aren't as talented as every other group. Regardless of that, I look at us as a national team. We just don't call ourselves a national team, but we have a national network of baseball players that love the game, hate losing and just find ways to win,” Bonilla closed with.
Earlier in the day, GBG National downed the Scottsdale Dirtbags, 7-4, to claim bronze. The GBG National program has now medaled in every division of Champs 2026 after winning 17U gold and taking bronze in 15 and 16U.
Champs Arizona will head into its final week of action with 14U action slated to begin on Thursday, July 2nd from Peoria and Surprise. Fans can follow all the action through GameChanger in addition to social media coverage through the official @USABaseEvents accounts across Instagram and X.
