Centers for Disease Control: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
DURHAM, N.C. - USA Baseball announced today that the 2020 National High School Invitational (NHSI), the Futures Series in Melissa, Texas, and all USA Baseball Coaches Clinics and National Team Identification Series (NTIS) regional tryouts through April 15 have been cancelled or postponed amid concerns surrounding the rapid spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) across the United States.
"We have been working closely with the USA Baseball Medical Safety Committee, as well as monitoring the guidelines and recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to acquire the latest information on this global situation. Given that, and in an effort to protect the health and safety of all those involved, we have decided to cancel the 2020 National High School Invitational, as well as all USA Baseball events through April 15," said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball's Executive Director and CEO. "We are disappointed that we will not be able to hold these tournaments and tryouts, but our top priority continues to be the health and safety of the athletes, fans, parents, coaches and administrators who travel from around the entire country for these events."
The ninth edition of the annual NHSI tournament was scheduled to occur from April 1-4 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The Futures Series was to be held from April 17-19 at the Melissa Sports Complex in Melissa, Texas, while the Coaches Clinics and NTIS tryouts were set to take place throughout six regions in the U.S.
The NHSI will not be postponed to another date in 2020 but will recommence in 2021, and the Futures Series in Melissa, Texas, will also not be rescheduled in 2020.
USA Baseball will continue to closely monitor the ongoing situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and diligently evaluate the status of its events scheduled to take place after April 15. All decisions will be made in as timely of a manner as possible with respect to the safety and well-being of all the participating athletes, coaches and fans.
Further information on possible new dates for the NTIS regional tryouts and all additional Coaches Clinics will be announced at a later time.
