The NHSI was designed to bring together 16 of the top prep teams in the country to compete against each other in what has become the premiere event on the high school baseball calendar. As no event currently brings in a level of talent from top to bottom that the NHSI promises, the eventual tournament champion earns the recognition as the top high school baseball team in the country as they head into their season.

Each year, the tournament is played at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, and has featured 100 schools from 20 states across the country.

Since its inception, the NHSI has been a part of the journey for countless players who have gone on to become first-round draft picks and play in both Minor and Major League Baseball. Cody Bellinger, Max Fried, Joey Gallo and Austin Riley make up some of the top names to have gone on to play in the majors, as well as Jordyn Adams, Brady Aiken, Triston Casas and Brady Aiken, who, among others, went on to be first round draft picks.

Orange Lutheran High School (Orange, Calif.) was in search of its fourth consecutive NHSI title in 2020 and leads all schools in the U.S. with three championships. The Lancers have won its last 13 games at the event dating back to 2014 and holds a 15-4 all-time record.

Other past winners include Huntington Beach (Calif.), two-time champion Mater Dei (Calif.), San Clemente (Calif.) and The First Academy (Fla.), who is the lone team not from California to win the NHSI.
