Team USA, Puerto Rico Washed Away Once Again

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – For the second-straight day, the USA Baseball Professional National Team saw its matchup with Puerto Rico at the 2021 World Baseball Softball Confederation Baseball Americas Qualification (AOQ) Event fall victim to persistent thunderstorms at Clover Park.

Moments after Nick Allen's fourth-inning grand slam handed Team USA a 6-1 lead, the skies opened, bringing a halt to the rescheduled final contest of Group A competition. The game, which was postponed Wednesday evening due to heavy rain as well, will not be resumed, as the U.S. had previously clinched a berth in the AOQ's deciding Super Round with its 8-6 win over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

The U.S. will move on to the Super Round as the top finisher in Group A with a 2-0 overall mark in the tournament. More importantly, the stars and stripes will take a 1-0 record against the Super Round field into play this weekend by virtue of their victory over the Dominican Republic – the other qualifier from Group A.

The United States will match up against Canada at 7 p.m. ET, Friday (June 4) evening at The Ballpark at the Palm Beaches to open Super Round competition, before taking on Venezuela Saturday (June 5) in another 7 p.m. game at Clover Park.

Each game throughout the AOQ will be streamed live on ESPN+.
