PHOENIX — Jackson Waller and Ryan Cainzos totaled six combined hits and three RBI to power BPA Black to an 8-6 win against San Diego Show on Day 2 of competition at the 2021 17U National Team Championships Arizona.
Waller, a 6-foot infielder, set the tone for BPA Black with singles in each of his first two at-bats. He came around to score the first run of the game when Ethan Presley reached via an error.
BPA put up three runs in the opening frame, which included a stretch of six of seven batters reaching base safely (three singles, two HBP, one error), and never relinquished the lead. Cainzos laced a single to left in the second to make it a 4-1 game, and BPA's lead grew to as much as 6-1 before San Diego Show jumped on the comeback trail.
Luke Rhee's two-run single up the middle in the fifth brought San Diego Show back within striking distance and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Duke Ekstrom cut the deficit to just two runs.
However, BPA Black continued to battle at the plate and forced numerous deep counts against San Diego Show starter Jacob Connelly, who worked 5.2 innings despite a rocky first frame. BPA put two more runs on the board courtesy of Waller's third hit of the afternoon, a two-RBI single to center.
San Diego Show brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but BPA's Jack Hagen induced a fielders' choice grounder to end the game.
BPA Black (3-0) remains undefeated through its first two days at the 17U National Team Championships.
San Diego Show fell to 1-1-1 at the tournament with the loss.
