CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball’s 2026 16U/17U National Team Development Program continued Wednesday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Team Navy earned a 7-5 victory over Team Light Blue in the day’s opener before Team Red defeated Team Grey, 7-3, to close out the doubleheader.
NAVY 7, LIGHT BLUE 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Team Navy wasted no time getting on the board, as Derek Vazquez launched a 420-foot solo home run to right field in the top of the first inning. Hank Drew followed with a double before his pinch runner, Kameron Gillespie, came around to score on an RBI groundout, giving Team Navy an early 2-0 lead.
- Adding to its advantage in the second, Team Navy’s Isaiah Cador led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
- Team Light Blue responded in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff walk and a single by Xavier Rodriguez put two runners aboard before Tre Lawrence lined a two-run triple to left field. Cooper Holland followed with a 413-foot, two-run home run to right, capping a four-run inning and giving Team Light Blue a 4-3 lead.
- Reclaiming its lead in the fifth, Team Navy drew back-to-back walks to open the inning, which was followed by a flyout and error to put both runners in scoring position. An Axton Westmoreland sacrifice fly brought both runners home.
- Team Navy added to its lead in the sixth after a walk and a hit-by-pitch put two runners on. Aiden Kearney delivered an RBI single before CJ Estrella drove another run with a sacrifice fly to center field, extending the lead to 7-4.
- Team Light Blue threatened in the bottom half of the inning when Macgraw VanWormer singled to lead off and later scored on an RBI groundout by Rodriguez to trim the deficit to two. However, Team Navy held Team Light Blue scoreless in the seventh to secure the 7-5 victory.
NOTABLE STATS
- Holland and Rodriguez each recorded a game-high two hits.
- Greyson Bell struck out five over two scoreless innings, the most of any pitcher.
- Cador and VanWormer each scored two runs to lead all batters.
- Holland, Lawrence, and Westmoreland each drove in two runs.
- Ty Pohl tallied four strikeouts, while Chase Cotton and Trigg Listerman each struck out three batters.
- Chase Fillman, Tristan Blalock, and Bell all tossed scoreless outings.
RED 7, GREY 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Team Grey struck first in the top of the first inning, as Landon King reached on a single before advancing to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. King later scored on a throwing error by the third baseman during a groundout, and Keona Barraza followed with an RBI single to give Team Grey an early 2-0 lead.
- Team Red answered in the bottom half of the inning when Rylan Jenkins hit an infield single and Jake Welch drew a walk to lead off. Jenkins stole both second and third before scoring on an overthrow by the catcher, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
- Team Red took its first lead in the second inning. Jacob Carrasco opened the frame with a single to left before Lennex Minor added a base hit. Carrasco’s pinch runner, Kensen Johnson, came home on a sacrifice fly by Nate Godbold, and Jenkins followed with an RBI double to left field to put Team Red in front, 3-2.
- Team Grey responded in the top of the third. Noah Jarolimek singled to center field and Terrell Hampton-Hall worked a walk to put two runners on. Jarolimek advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an overthrow to third by Team Red’s catcher, evening the score at 3-3.
- To reclaim the lead for Team Red, Minor blasted a solo home run to left field, giving his team a 4-3 advantage.
- Team Red added to its lead in the fifth. Jenkins lined a single to center field to open the frame before Johnson doubled him in. Anthony Frausto III followed with an RBI single to left field to extend the lead to 6-3.
- Adding more insurance runs in the sixth, Mark Williams Jr. led off with a double to right field before Godbold singled to left, putting two runners aboard. Jenkins lined a double to left field to score Williams and extend Team Red’s advantage to 7-3.
- Team Grey was unable to rally in the seventh, finalizing Team Red’s 7-3 victory.
NOTABLE STATS
- Tanner Conley struck out a game-high seven batters in his three innings of work.
- Jenkins went 4-for-4 and led all batters with five hits and two RBIs.
- Jarolimek, Jenkins, Johnson, and Minor each scored two runs, the most of all batters.
- William Schaefer recorded five strikeouts, while Keona Barraza and Yates Ashley each tallied four.
- Jeremiah Hall and Schaefer both tossed scoreless innings.
