Pitching Staff Leads Stripes to 7-1 Victory over Stars

Five Stripes pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits

CARY, N.C. - The pitching staff led the charge in the Stripes 7-1 win over the Stars Wednesday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, holding the Stars to just one run on five hits. The contest marked the final trials game of the 2019 USA Baseball 15U National Team Trials as the coaching staff will announce the final, 20-man national team roster later Wednesday evening. 
Brandon Barriera started on the bump for the Stripes, tossing two innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just one hit and no walks. He was followed out of the bullpen by Matthew Matthijs, Brandon Olivera, Mason Neville, and Nazier Mule. The relief staff combined for seven innings while allowing one run (none earned) and four hits. Barriera (1-0) earned the win for his efforts while Duke Ekstrom (0-1) was the losing pitcher of record.
Kai Caranto, Oscar Hernandez-Gonzalez and Nazier Mule each turned in multi-hit performances for the Stripes, going a combined 6-for-13 with four RBIs and two runs scored. In total, Stripes scored seven runs on the day on 13 hits to secure the 7-1 victory over the Stars

Key Moments:
• Oscar Hernandez-Gonzales singled up the middle to drive in Joseph Brown and a throwing error on the same play allowed Austen Roellig to cross the plate, putting Stripes up 2-0 in the top of the first.
• Brown lined a single up the middle in the second to drive in Brady Reynolds and extend the Stripes lead to 3-0.
• With runners on second and third and one away, Benjamin Reiland hit a sacrifice-fly to straight away center field, bringing in the fourth run of the day for the Stripes.
• With a runner in scoring position and two outs, Ty Southisene singled to left, but Termarr Johnson threw the runner out at the plate, preserving the 4-0 score.
• Drew Burress hit a sacrifice-fly to left field in the bottom of the third, getting Stars on the board to make it 4-1.
• Roellig and Kai Caranto led off the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles and came around to score via a Nazier Mule double to left, extending the Stripes lead to 6-1.
• Mason Neville drove in Mule with a single up the middle the following at-bat, pushing the Stripes lead to six and securing the 7-1 victory over the Stars.
