CARY, N.C. – The stars and stripes were well represented at this year’s MLB All-Star Game, with 25 USA Baseball alumni featured across the American League and National League All-Star rosters. This year’s Midsummer Classic also featured a Legend Pick, hand-chosen by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, who selected 2005 18U National Team alum Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers) as an automatic All-Star.
The National League (NL) All-Star roster featured 16 Team USA alums while the American League (AL) boasted nine alums.
Seven alumni were selected into the starting lineups, as five started for the NL and two for the AL. Those for the NL were Will Smith (Los Angeles Dodgers), Freddie Freeman (Los Angeles Dodgers), Manny Machado (San Diego Padres), Francisco Lindor (New York Mets), Pete Crow-Armstrong (Chicago Cubs), and Kyle Tucker (Chicago Cubs). Meanwhile, the AL starters were highlighted by Riley Greene (Detroit Tigers) and Jacob Wilson (Athletics).
Being named the starting pitcher for the NL was Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates), who made history by becoming the first player in MLB history to start an All-Star Game in each of his first two seasons in the majors.
Among the 25 alumni that competed, seven players made an All-Star Game roster for the first time in their careers.
Players who made their first All-Star Game appearance included Wilson, who earned an All-Star roster spot as a rookie, Crow-Armstrong, Casey Mize (Detroit Tigers), Joe Ryan (Minnesota Twins), Andrew Abbott (Cincinnati Reds), Jason Adam (San Diego Padres), and David Peterson (New York Mets).
In total, two players – Skenes and Crow-Armstrong – competed on the 2014 12U National Team as teammates, while Crow-Armstrong AND Tucker suited up on a past 15U National Team. Four All-Stars are 16U National Team alumni, 10 players have 18U National Team experience, eight Collegiate National Team alumni took the field, and 10 players have previously played for the Professional Team.
