Stars and Stripes End Game Two in 2-2 Tie

CARY, N.C. -- Game two of the 2019 14U National Team Development Program (NTDP) ended in a 2-2 tie between the Stars and Stripes Monday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The two teams combined for seven hits in the contest.
Brandon Olivera (Hialeah, Fla.) started on the mound for the Stripes. He allowed one run on one hit, while walking five and striking out four in two innings of work. Keondre Fields (Memphis, Tenn.), Bryce Rainer (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Brooks Wright (Knoxville, Tenn.) also tossed the ball for the Stripes. The trio combined for one run on two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. 
For the Stars, Cole Stokes (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was the first man on the bump in game two. Stokes scattered two hits across three innings of work and struck out two batters. Spencer Butt (Davie, Fla.), Miles Ghossein (West Hills, Calif.) and Owen Egan (Yucaipa, Calif.) came in in relief. Egan struck out three and walked three while Egan and Ghossein struck out two apiece. 
Key Moments

  • The Stars were first on the board when three walks loaded the bases and a hit-by-pitch pushed Angel Cepeda (Union City, N.J.) across the plate to give the Stars a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. 
  • After doubling to left earlier in the inning, Kai Caranto (Santa Clarita, Calif.) scored the Stripes' first run of the contest on a Stars error to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • The Stars regained a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Chris Newstrom (Anthem, Ariz.) hit a sac-fly to right that scored Egan, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
  • The Stripes answered in the eighth when Jonathan Mendez (Los Angeles, Calif.), who hit a leadoff single to get things started, advanced to third courtesy of a wild pitch and a flyout before scoring on a passed ball for the final score of 2-2.

  • The Stripes pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and stranded four runners. 
  • Caranto led the Stars in the box, going 1-for-2 and scoring a run in the fifth.
