CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball today finalized the coaching staff for the 2025 Collegiate National Team Training Camp. The staff will be split into two teams – Stars and Stripes – for its annual Stars vs. Stripes series, which will be held June 29 to July 3 at various locations across North Carolina. Following Training Camp, which features 56 of the premier non-draft-eligible collegiate players in the country, the Stars staff will lead Team USA at the 45th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Championship Series from July 8-13 at various venues across Japan. The Stripes staff will guide select players on a Collegiate National Team Prospects squad in a Fourth of July matchup with the Appalachian League Select Team in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
“We are excited about the coaching staff we have put together for this year’s Collegiate National Team Training Camp,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball’s General Manager of Collegiate and Professional National Teams. “This is a strong group of coaches who will be able to provide our players with a world-class experience this summer. We look forward to not only competing at a high level with our two exposures, but also developing the select players we bring to Cary and providing them with a wealth of knowledge from this group of coaches.”
Rusty Filter (pitching coach), Omar Johnson (first base coach), Bill Mosiello (third base coach), Carlos Muñoz (bullpen coach), and Don Wakamatsu (bench/hitting coach), will join manager Andy Stankiewicz in coaching the Stars Team at the Collegiate National Team Training Camp as well as the squad that will compete in the 45th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series. Additionally, Brad Brown will serve as a video and data analytics specialist for the Collegiate National Team as he currently holds the position with Oregon State’s baseball program.
Filter, Johnson, Mosiello, Stankiewicz, and Wakamatsu will bring a combined 138 years of coaching experience across all levels of the game to Cary and Japan. Filter just completed his eighth season as head coach at Santa Clara, and the 2025 season marked Stankiewicz’s third season as USC’s head coach as he returns to USA Baseball for the fifth time as a coach. Johnson recently wrapped up his 18th season at the helm of Jackson State’s baseball program, and Mosiello just helped lead TCU to an NCAA Regional appearance in the first season of his second stint with the Horned Frogs. Wakamatsu has spent nearly three decades in the professional baseball ranks, from serving on staff with various minor league clubs, to coaching with five different MLB Clubs, to his current role as executive vice president of the Oakland Ballers.
The 2025 season will be Filter and Wakamatsu’s first time coaching with a USA Baseball national team, while Johnson was a coach at the 2023 Collegiate National Team Training Camp and Mosiello was on the 2017 18U National Team staff. Additionally, Muñoz has been a bullpen coach for Team USA on three separate occasions and will bring a wealth of knowledge relative to international competition to the staff.
Jonathan Hernandez will manage the Stripes Team and Collegiate National Team Prospects squad, and will be joined by Butch Chaffin (assistant coach), Michael Choice (first base coach), Dan Hartleb (bench/hitting coach), LaTroy Hawkins (pitching coach), Joe McGowan (bullpen catcher), and Dave Tollett (third base coach).
Hartleb, Hernandez, and Tollett are all head coaches and have built championship-caliber programs at their respective schools. Hernandez has been at the helm of Bethune-Cookman since 2019, while Hartleb just wrapped up his 20th season at Illinois and Tollett recently completed his 23rd season as head coach at Florida Gulf Coast. The trio owns a combined 1,523 wins as head coaches. Hernandez and Tollett will be making their coaching debuts with USA Baseball, while Hartleb was a coach for the 2021 Collegiate National Team. Chaffin and Hawkins are deeply rooted in USA Baseball, as they have both served as national team coaches on numerous occasions, been a part of various Task Forces, and spent time with several of its development programs over the last two decades. Choice, a 2009 Collegiate National Team alum, brings a wealth of professional playing experience and scouting expertise to Cary, as he held a 12-year major-league playing career and has been an MLB scout since 2022.
