14U marks the final Champs NC week of the summer, and 16 teams have their eyes set on a gold medal. The first day of pool play kept the action coming — from walk-offs to multi-home run games, day one had it all. Read below to catch up on today’s excitement.
Team Elite 5, Traction Canes 14U National 4
The first game of 14U Champs NC ended in walk-off fashion. After a couple of RBI doubles opened up a 4-0 lead for Canes 14U National, Team Elite began to claw their way back in. An RBI double followed by a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth squared the game at four apiece. After pitching a three-up, three-down top of the seventh, Tipton Roop came through with an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame to give Team Elite the win.
PRD 7, TBT Phillies Scout 3
PRD struck first in the opening frame after stringing together four walks to crack open a 1-0 lead. TBT Phillies Scout answered in the following half inning, scoring three runs while mixing in singles, walks, and a sac fly. In the third, Dean Conway brought PRD back in front with an RBI single, then capitalized on defensive miscues to bring himself and teammate Cash Kelly home. PRD added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth to push the game out of reach.
SBA Bolts National 8, Arizona Diamondbacks Midwest Scout/S2N Select 4
SBA Bolts National took full advantage of a miscue-filled first inning on defense for the Arizona Diamondbacks Midwest Scout. SBA recorded five runs to open the contest, using three hit-by-pitches, two walks, and two wild pitches to fuel their start. The following inning, SBA tacked on three more runs to increase their lead to 8-0. The Arizona Diamondbacks Midwest Scout comeback attempt ultimately fell short, and SBA held on with an 8-4 win.
Canes National 14U 11, CBU Scout Team Madsen 3
After a pair of walks in the fourth by Holden Howard and JJ Nixon, Daniel Daye’s RBI groundout broke the scoreless match. Then, Walker McCrory followed up with an RBI single to give Canes National a 2-0 edge. CBU Scout Team Madsen answered immediately, stringing together three runs in the top of the fifth to capture a 3-2 lead. It was all Canes National the rest of the way, with nine runs coming in the final two frames, including a three-RBI triple, run-rule walk-off by Nixon.
TBT Phillies Scout 6, Traction Canes 14U National 0
A 6-0 shutout victory for TBT Phillies Scout saw just three hits for Traction Canes 14U National. Kolt Hampton got the scoring started for TBT, with an RBI triple in the fourth before a Paxton Scoggin’s RBI single bumped the lead up to 2-0. Their two-run edge would hold until the final frame where they tacked on four more runs off of three RBI-walks and an RBI single which would prove to be enough of a cushion.
PRD 6, Team Elite 4
A back-and-forth contest between PRD and Team Elite started off with a bang. In the top of the first, Chet Sabin launched a two-run home run over the left field wall to give Team Elite an early 2-0 advantage. PRD responded the following half inning, with two quick walks and a two-RBI double from Dean Conway which squared it. Conway later scored on a wild pitch to give PRD a 3-2 lead after the opening frame. In the fourth, Sabin showed retribution, as his RBI sac fly tied the game at three before Andrew Owen’s RBI single gave Team Elite the lead. Once more, PRD answered, with a two-RBI single and RBI double in the fourth and fifth innings to capture the win.
Canes National 14U 8, Arizona Diamondbacks Midwest Scout/S2N Select 1
JJ Nixon had a big day to help lift Canes National over the Arizona Diamondbacks Midwest Scout/S2N Select 8-1. Nixon went 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs and struck out a pair, while preventing any runs or hits as the closing pitcher for Canes National. Then, it was Daniel Dye’s two-run inside-the-park home run in the top of the seventh that helped seal the deal for Canes National.
SBA Bolts National 11, CBU Scout Team Madsen 0
The SBA Bolts National offense was on full display in this mercy-rule win over CBU Scout Team Madsen. SBA got it going right away, as they used four singles to get out to a 3-0 lead after the first. In the third, their offense reached another gear, with the first five batters all reaching safely, ultimately leading to a grand slam from Euris Estevez to put SBA up 9-0. Their final two runs came off another long bomb, courtesy of Amir Kriz-Hopkins, in the following frame.
ZT National Prospects 9, SC Panthers 2030 Marucci 3
ZT National Prospects rolled to a 9-3 win over the SC Panthers 2030 Marucci. For ZT, Christopher Cabrera had a day at the plate, reaching base safely four times, including a double and a triple, while tacking on three RBIs in the process. ZT jumped out to an early 5-0 start through the first four frames, before the SC Panthers attempted to mount a comeback. After having their lead cut to 5-3 in the fifth, ZT responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Wow Factor National 9, Padres 14U Scout Team 1
A steady offensive performance from Wow Factor National helped lead to a 9-1 victory. Jack Haines’ RBI sac fly put Wow Factor on the board in the first before Jacob Miller advanced home on a passed ball to grab a 2-0 lead after one. Ian Ferguson’s single set up and RBI triple from Brody Wilkins, then another passed ball allowed Wow Factor to take a 4-0 lead after the second frame. The contest was in danger of a run-rule conclusion for the Padres Scout Team before a run in the bottom of the sixth pushed it to seven innings. However, Wow Factor was able to prevent a comeback attempt and secured the win.
USA Prime National 4, Top Dawg National 2
USA Prime National never wavered in a close contest against Top Dawg National. Getting the scoring started for USA Prime, Easton Mauler’s RBI single in the second frame gave his squad a 1-0 edge. The following inning, Top Dawg responded with an RBI single of their own courtesy of Gray Richardson. Townsend Boyd came through in a major way for USA Prime, with a two-RBI single in the fourth to give them a 3-1 advantage. Boyd also delivered on the mound, throwing four strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief.
Furia National 9, Canes Midwest National 0
A near no-hitter wrapped up Monday’s action with Furia National on top with a 9-0 run-rule victory. Leadoff batter Mark De Leon had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a triple. On the mound, Brody Peterson went three innings of hitless baseball with three punchouts.
