USA Baseball Boasts 160 Alumni on Opening Day Rosters

All 30 Clubs feature at least one former member of a national team

CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball announced today that 160 alumni kicked off the 2022 Major League Baseball season on Opening Day rosters. All 30 Major League Clubs feature at least one former USA Baseball national team member to begin the season for the first time since 2019.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners each boast 10 former Team USA members on their rosters to lead all Clubs. The Oakland Athletics have eight on their roster, and seven alums are with the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

In total, 20 of the 30 Clubs feature five or more players who suited up for the red, white, and blue in international competition.

Nine USA Baseball alums debuted on an MLB roster to begin the 2022 season: CJ Abrams (San Diego Padres), Hunter Greene (Cincinnati Reds), Zach Jackson (Oakland Athletics), Jacob Lemoine (Oakland Athletics), Andre Pallante (St. Louis Cardinals), Konnor Pilkington (Cleveland Guardians), Bryson Stott (Philadelphia Phillies), Spencer Torkelson (Detroit Tigers), and Bobby Witt Jr. (Kansas City Royals).

Four alums were named as the Opening Day starting pitchers for the respective clubs: Walker Buehler (Los Angeles Dodgers), Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees), Robbie Ray (Seattle Mariners), and Joe Ryan (Minnesota Twins). Ryan most recently won a silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with Team USA, where he went 1-0 in two appearances with 8 strikeouts in 10.1 innings. He will face-off against fellow alum Ray when the Mariners and Twins open their season this afternoon.

Reigning NL MVP and three-time alum Bryce Harper begins his 11th season in the bigs and is one of six Golden Spikes Award winners who earned an Opening Day roster spot. Joining Harper are Andrew Benintendi (Kansas City Royals), Kris Bryant (Colorado Rockies), David Price (Los Angeles Dodgers), Andrew Vaughn (Chicago White Sox), and Mike Zunino (Tampa Bay Rays).

Additionally, eight alumni are managing around the league, including Aaron Boone (New York Yankees), Terry Francona (Cleveland Indians), Joe Girardi (Philadelphia Phillies), AJ Hinch (Detroit Tigers), Mark Kotsay (Oakland Athletics), Dave Roberts (Los Angeles Dodgers), David Ross (Chicago Cubs), and Scott Servais (Seattle Mariners). Francona is the only alum managing an MLB team that has played and coached for a USA Baseball national team.
